MidSummer Garden & Art Faire

The Mat Su Special Santa Program, the sponsoring organization of the Palmer Garden & Art Faire, invites you to enjoy the many gifts of the garden, the art studio, and the kitchen that will be presented at the First Annual Midsummer Garden & Art Faire in downtown Palmer.
 
Dozens of vendors, entertainers, and educational events will be featured, as well as lots of activities for kids.
 From the Palmer Depot, to the Visitor's Center; from the Village Green Main Stage to sites throughout town, be prepared to network with fellow gardeners and friends. No admission charge. But donation opportunities will be available for the Mat Su special Santa Program.

11:30-12: 00  -   Gold from Garbage!  The nuts and bolts of good compost!  Jodie Anderson,  Instructor and Alaska Community Horticulture Project, Directorepartment of High Latitude Agriculture, School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Matanuska Experiment Farm.
 
        - Plant Twigging: Artful Support for your Plants - Master gardener Hallie Truelove weaves her way around many a perennial with willows and alders.  Using traditional Welsh methods of willow craft, Hallie will demonstrate the ins and outs of this ancient garden art of plant support.
 
12:15 - 12:45 - Blue Poppies Demystified.  Betty Vehrs will let you in on the secret to growing those fabulous Meconopsis without tears!   
 
1 - 1:30 -   Growing Blue Ribbon Flowers in Your Home Garden.  Pat Tremaine, State Fair Grand Champion grower, will share her tips and tricks for growing those blue ribbon flowers in your garden.
 
                - Romancing the Stones: From Cobblestones to Wild Rocks.  Landscape specialist and garden designer, Sally Koppenberg,  Stonehill Gardens, will share her ideas and revelations on hardscaping in the garden.
 
1:45 - 2:15 - The Giant Cabbages are Coming!  Bridgette Preston, veteran gardener and State Fair giant cabbage maven, will take you on a worldwide tour of these vegetable wonders. Cabbage lore and legend, plus tasting opportunities
        
               -Flower Design from your  Garden - Hazel Koppenberg's flower arranging would make Martha Stewart wish she'd stayed in catering.  Hazel's style evokes Japan meets modern urban florist with her innovative uses of twigs, foliage, and flowers.  Learn how to take the simple and turn it into a  centerpiece sure to make Martha grit her teeth with envy! (Repeats at 2:30-3)
 
2:30 - 3:00 -  Potatoes: Queen of the Vegetable Garden .  Jodie Anderson,  Instructor and Alaska Community Horticulture Project, Director Department of High Latitude Agriculture, School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Matanuska Experiment Farm.

3:15 - 3:45 -  Fabulous Lilies for Zone 3 Gardeners!  Brooke Heppinstall from WoolWood Studio & Gardens in Palmer will give you the lowdown on growing hardy Asiatic and LA hybrid lilies in south central Alaska.
 
The above schedules are still subject to last minute tweaking, but this is a good indicator of the great events that are in store for your enjoyment and education on Saturday.
