GPCC & GPWC Joint Chamber Meeting

On May 7th, 2008 the Greater Palmer Chamber of Commerce and Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce held their second joint Chamber meeting at the Alaska Job Corps campus. Thank you Pat Gamble of the AK Railroad for a great program and great door prizes! Door prizes also sponsored by: Nonessentials, Diamond Airport Parking, AlaskaUSA, MTA, and The Alaska Club. A special thank you to Margie, catering director of AJC, for preparing a fantastic Chamber lunch! Stay tuned for the next joint Chamber meeting to be held in Wasilla in the fall. 

 

AGFOA Conference- May 7, 8, 9 - Palmer, AK

 A conference in Palmer? Yes, it can be done! Thank you GPCC members for making the annual Spring Alaska Government Finanical Officer's Conference truly unforgetable for this group! Over 100 finanical officer's, from around the state of Alaska, toured the streets of downtown Palmer this past week.  Hosting the largest  attendance to date, as quoted by Dean Baugh, Finance Director for the City of Palmer...Palmer really shined! Thank you GPCC Members such as the Colony Inn, the Valley Hotel, , Alaska Garden Gate B&B, In-Fu-Sion Boutique, The Red Beet Cafe, Vagabond Blues, for helping to showcase Palmer and our fabulous treats! In addition, thank you VIC staff for assisting these guests with Palmer tourist information during their stay. The GPCC takes great pride in promoting the business community and our members, with conference opportunites such as this. Thank you City of Palmer for diligent efforts in keeping the GPCC updated and your enthusiasm in working together! Many more to come!

 

Palmer Clean Up Day - A HUGE Success!

On Saturday, May 10th, records show at least 411 bags were distributed to over 100 volunteers and their familes - with one purpose in mind- to clean up the debris in Palmer!  Along with beautiful weather, some of the most popular visited and beautified streets were S. Colony Way, Arctic, Palmer-Fishhook, Evergreen, Bailey Street, the Fairgrounds, and  the Glenn Hwy. For all  the hard work from area volunteers, a filling picnic lunch of hot dogs, chips, and soda was provided.  To finish off the evening and kick of the grand show of door prizes was Mayor John Combs and Council Member Michael Chmielewski. Total attendance reached over 250! Thank you City of Palmer, VCRS, Palmer chamber volunteers - Pam Stephen, Jaccie Gaines, Seth Kelley, Penny Griffin, John Douglass, Sara Jansen, Charles Griffin, Chamber Staff Randi Perlman, and VIC staff Paula Ahrens and Linda Llewlyn for  making this year's Clean Up Day smooth running!

This IRS workshop is designed to help small business owners understand their employment tax responsibilities.  Emphasis is on the proper preparation of employment tax forms and required timely federal tax deposits. 
 
May 15     Competing in a Growing Marketplace: Branding  
                  Strategy (Radio Advertising) 1:30pm-3:30pm              Free
                                                                                            
 This workshop will be presented by Matt Duncan from Tati Broadcasting.  The presentation will include a quick overview of the micro vs. macro economics view  that a business owner must balance in order to form rational strategies.  There will be a discussion about business systems and managing a business vs. working for business.  The information will cover short and long term strategies to compete in a given market, branding and advertising, and the known strengths and weaknesses of 
each of the three types of advertising.  This workshop is free but pre-registration is  required.
 
May 15      Business Counselor in Sutton             1pm-4pm        Free
The SBDC business counselor will visit the Sutton area for the day.  He will have general business information available and will discuss specific topics one-on-one during scheduled appointments.  The counselor is available for both current and prospective business owners.  These appointments are free of charge but must be scheduled in advance.
 
May 20      QuickBooks Payroll (computers provided)
                                                                          9am-4pm                    $100
This hands-on (computers provided) workshop will cover setting up an employee, paying that employee, using timesheets and without timesheets, creating payroll reports, paying payroll liabilities, and creating quarterly and year end reports including 941, 940, and W-2’s. Attendees must already be familiar with QuickBooks.

Sen. Charlie Huggins- 5th Annual Trail of Remembrance Announcement

For the past 4 years, MidValley High School has honored America's veterans in their own special way by hosting and sponsoring their own 'Trail of Remembrance' dedicated to America's veterans.


The Trail of Remembrance is a 5 kilometer (3 miles) trail that follows the bike path from the Big Lake turn-off on the Parks Highway to the MidValley High School in the Meadow Lakes City Center at mile 49 Parks Highway. Registered participants may choose to walk, run or bike the distance.  Anyone can participate for just $15.For more information and to participate contact Senator Charlie Huggins  Senator_Charlie_Huggins@legis.state.ak.us.

Members of the Mat-Su CVB/Visitor Information Center will host an open house, May 14th starting at 5 p.m. Every Mat-Su CVB member will have a 3-minute spotlight on their business. It’s a great way to make valuable contacts and generate referrals! Refreshments – including VIC manager Lorraine Jallen’s world famous root beer floats – will be served.
 
Relay For Life of Mat-Su Announcement  
May 16 – 17 Event

MTA Public Relations & Relay for Life of Mat-Su Publicity Chair
 
Everyone is invited to join the Relay For Life of Mat-Su May 16 – 17 at the Colony High School Track. The event starts with a survivor and caregiver reception on Friday night at 6 pm where Mat-Su Regional Medical Center is donating sugar free desserts and refreshments with a special presentation by cancer survivor Dee Dee Jonrowe, followed by our opening ceremony with a guest speaker Dr. Tricia Carrigan, an American Cancer Society funded researcher. She will explain the latest developments in prostrate cancer and how the money she’s received has helped boost her research. Then gather at the track with all the survivors and Governor Sarah Palin as she cuts the ribbon for the official start of the Relay approximately at 7:45 pm.  There are many fun activities, entertainment, and fundraisers throughout the 20-hour event. Even if you are not on a team, please bring your family and join a ll of us at the Mat-Su Relay.  Mad Science will have several demonstrations for kids at 10 pm on Friday evening just before the luminaria set and lap. Remember to bring your money for the many fundraisers along the track and for the Susitna Rotary silent auction. On Saturday, we will have a Military appreciation breakfast at 8a m sponsored by Tailgaters and a survivor/caregiver breakfast sponsored and catered by Mat-Su Regional Medical Center at 8:30 am where the beautiful queen size quilt donated by Valley Quilter’s Guild will be raffled off.
